Installation is a controlled sequence
A self-drilling screw must first establish the drill point, penetrate the steel, transition into thread engagement and finally clamp the connected components. Treating the entire operation as a single uncontrolled driving action can cause premature point wear, thread damage or overdriving.
Rotational speed
Excessive rotational speed can generate unnecessary heat at the drill point and reduce drilling efficiency. Very low speed can also produce unstable drilling depending on the screw and substrate. The correct range is product-specific, so installation equipment should allow controlled speed rather than relying only on maximum tool RPM.
Axial pressure
The installer must maintain sufficient and reasonably steady axial pressure to keep the drill point engaged with the steel. Too little pressure can allow the point to skate or polish the surface. Excessive pressure can overload the point or cause poor control when breakthrough occurs.
The breakthrough transition
When the drill point exits the steel, resistance changes quickly. The operator or controlled driver must allow the threaded portion to engage without continuing the drilling phase unnecessarily. This transition is one reason correct screw length and point geometry matter.
Final seating
For screws used with sealing washers, the objective is controlled compression, not maximum possible tightening. Under-compression may leave an inadequate seal while excessive tightening can distort the washer, damage the sheet or strip the engaged thread. The screw head should seat consistently with the product and assembly requirements.
Common installation errors
- using a screw outside its verified drilling range;
- running the driver continuously at excessive speed;
- insufficient axial pressure during drilling;
- tilting the screw instead of maintaining alignment;
- continuing to drive after correct seating;
- reusing a hole after thread stripping without engineering review.

Correct installation protects the performance already designed into the fastener. Use appropriate driving equipment, maintain alignment, control speed and pressure and verify final seating. Where the manufacturer provides product-specific installation parameters, those values take precedence over generic guidance.
